Most U.S. adults believe that air travel is generally safe in the U.S., despite some doubts about whether aircraft are being properly maintained and remain free from structural problems. About 7 in 10 U.S. adults say planes are a “very” or “somewhat” safe method of travel, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Slightly fewer than half — 45% — have “a great deal” of confidence in pilots' training, while 38% say that about air traffic controllers. About one-quarter of U.S. adults have a high level of confidence that air travel is safe from terrorist attacks, or that government agencies have enacted necessary safety regulations. Randi Niedfeldt, a retired physician assistant in Wisconsin, has a great deal of confidence in the planes, despite the recent incidents.

Periods of high inflation would offset those when inflation was low as occurred between the financial crisis and the pandemic. Those concerns may not matter anymore if the pandemic has driven inflation and interest rates chronically higher. Speaking at a Boston Fed labor market conference in November, Kohn said the new framework showed the risks of not keeping inflation at bay to begin with. "Probing" for maximum employment "can't ignore...inflation risks," Kohn said, calling for a return to a strategy disavowed in the last review. "I think preemptive tightening is best-practice central banking, and I hope they return to allowing that."

Job seekers using free AI programs like ChatGPT are asking the programs to tailor their resumes to a specific employer and job description, write cover letters, create writing samples and provide answers on job applications, according to Gartner, a research and consulting firm. Job candidates also can use it to help prepare for interview questions, should they get to that stage. “Use AI as a tool, but don’t use it as your only tool. “AI may not be as good in highlighting transferrable skills or telling the narrative of why you want to change careers. The best and most common way people find their next job is through their network,” Haller said.

The U.S. economy has avoided a threatened banking crisis and financial markets have not only aligned with the Federal Reserve's tight-credit policies but of late even helped the process by bidding up market interest rates. "I think Powell’s main effort is going to be explaining to what degree you want to hold (interest rates) higher for longer in the current outlook." Investors in contracts tied to the Fed's benchmark interest rate currently expect the Fed to begin reducing the policy rate next year from the current level set between 5.25% and 5.5%. Fed officials in fact have begun discussing the possibility of rate cuts down the road, at least in the context of steadily falling inflation. If inflation does decline as expected, Fed officials including Powell have suggested rate reductions might be appropriate to maintain a roughly constant inflation-adjusted "real rate."

The house in Devon similarly balances crisp forms, simple materials and the occasional more luxurious touch. Their interest piqued, Pinch and Bannon went to see the place, only to be told an offer had already been accepted. But several days later they received a phone call: the farmer felt hopeful the couple would respect his vision and invited them to make a competing offer. One side would incorporate the old barn — thought to date to around 1600 and the erstwhile home of the ice cream factory — and would accommodate two bedrooms. But we like the patina and big knots, which give it such character.”

SL Green Realty said it sold the building at 245 Park Avenue, which has 1.8 million-square-foot of office space, to a U.S. affiliate of Japanese real estate developer Mori Trust Co Ltd. Its sale represents a slight discount to the $2.21 billion that China's HNA Group paid to acquire the building in 2017 when New York City's commercial real estate market was at its peak. SL Green took control of 245 Park Avenue last year after lenders seized the building from HNA Group. Jesse Keenan, sustainable real estate professor at Tulane University, said the transaction is a speculative investment that suggests the deep downturn in the New York commercial real estate market may have bottomed out. SL Green Realty was the biggest gainer among listed REITs, leading its peers Vornado Realty Trust (VNO.N), Office Properties Income Trust (OPI.O), and Boston Properties Inc (BXP.N).

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the rate hike pause will give officials more time to evaluate the effects rate hikes have had on the economy so far. But he left the door open for the possibility of more rate hikes at future meetings. “Every time they relaxed rates inflation would ratchet up,” said Michael Bordo, an economics professor and director of the Center for Monetary and Financial History at Rutgers University. Many economists agree the Fed is not confronting the extreme dilemma Paul Volcker faced during his time as Fed Chair from 1979 to 1987. The Fed’s pause “doesn’t necessarily have adverse implications for inflation,” he said.

The Sulacks weighed their options: Have a transplant with a match that was less than ideal – far less – or wait for gene therapy to become available. The news release didn’t say anything else about the SCID gene therapy. Or was the company abandoning its plans for SCID gene therapy altogether? In February, 2021, the parents of more than 20 children who were waiting for the gene therapy treatment, including the Sulacks, wrote a letter to Gaspar. Insurance companies have sometimes balked at paying for gene therapy, which is typically given in one treatment.
Eugene Kohn led KPF as president until 2003 and remained chairman until early this year. Eugene Kohn’s timing didn’t seem ideal when he launched a New York-based architecture firm in 1976. Mr. Kohn estimated that nearly 60% of architects in the New York area were out of work. During an economic lull, it also was easy to make appointments with people likely to need his services eventually. After a slow start, his Kohn Pedersen Fox firm established itself within two decades as a major international contender.
WASHINGTON—TikTok launched a battalion of influencers in the nation’s capital Wednesday to send a message to Congress: Banning the app would be met with widespread popular opposition. “TikTok is not a children’s dancing app,” said Aidan Kohn-Murphy, a college freshman with close to 300,000 TikTok followers and founder of the advocacy group Gen-Z for Change. “It is one of the most powerful tools that young people have to engage each other and to get civically involved.”

Though the campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, it sparked a passion for political engagement that has since turned into a nonprofit called Gen-Z for Change. It says itworks with local, state, and federal organizations to effect policy change on topics including foreign policy, mental health, and climate. For the first year, Kohn-Murphy said, he spent time building the brand and working on a volunteer basis. He built the platform's infrastructure, created a posting schedule, and started to imagine what Gen-Z for Change could be outside of a TikTok account. A day in Kohn-Murphy's life includes attending classes at Harvard, building the business, and trying to have what he described as a typical college experience.
Santos, the psychology professor behind Yale University's most popular course, recently launched a free six-week version of the class aimed at teenagers, called "The Science of Well-Being for Teens." It was developed to address rising rates of anxiety, depression and suicide rates for kids between ninth and 12th grade, Santos says. 1, she preaches in one of the course's pre-recorded lectures: Our brains lie to us about what makes us happy. "The problem isn't that we're not putting work into feeling better — it's that we're doing the wrong things, prioritizing the wrong behaviors." Santos says she wants to help change those numbers by making the science of happiness accessible.
UCLA researchers are restarting a study to give a gene therapy to kids with an ultra-rare disease. Without gene therapy, doctors treat kids with SCID using enzyme-replacement therapies, if they are ineligible for bone-marrow transplants. In an email to Insider, Kohn said he expects to be able to treat between three and six patients with his current funding. Drug companies have shown little interest in the treatments because the complexity of the treatments and tiny number of eligible patients limit potential profits. Drug companies have deprioritized or shelved gene-therapy programs to treat a range of rare diseases, including Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, MPS, Batten disease, chronic granulomatous disease, Rett syndrome, and Fabry disease.
Swiss eye strong start in World Cup opener versus Cameroon
  + stars: | 2022-11-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
AL RAYYAN, Qatar, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Switzerland hope to secure early points in a tough Group G when they face Cameroon in their World Cup opener on Thursday after a year of solid performances on the European stage. The Swiss reached the Euro 2020 quarter-finals before losing a penalty shootout to Spain. They also finished ahead of Italy in their World Cup qualifying group to avoid the playoffs. But Cameroon -- playing in an eighth World Cup, a record number of appearances for an African nation -- have failed to leave their mark at the finals since the 1990 edition of the tournament, when they dazzled by reaching the quarter-finals. Cameroon will aim to at least get another World Cup victory this time, a task that could prove difficult for a side that qualified thanks to a stoppage-time goal at the end of extra time in the second leg of their playoff tie away to Algeria.
